Erdos just informed  me about Ramanujan a  few weeks ago. I  wish I'd
known before my whirlwind tour.

The reason I  drew your attention to Ram.'s being self-taught is that
he is in some sense in the same position as AM: some given abilities,
yet forced to start from scratch and decide dynamically what is/isn't
interesting.   Of all the human mathematicians, I'm happy that he was
the first  (and  apparently  so far  the  only  one) to  study  these
numbers.
